NATIONAL star Atanus Mugerwa was in devastating form as the National Seniors Boxing Championship started at Lugogo Indoor Stadium yesterday.
The bantam weight star marched to the quarterfinal with a first round stoppage against Edward Kyakuwa of Sentamu Boxing club.
Mugerwa, who was denied the Athens Olympic stint by injury, went offensive from the opening bell, landing several strong punches as his opponent vainly sought a big left.
With barely two minutes on the clock, Kyakuwa was forced into a count before the referee stopped the contest.
The victory set up the KBC fighter against upcoming Migadde Serunjogi in the weeklong tournament that will determine the national team.
In the other thrilling bout, bantamweight champion Martin Mubiru had to dig deep into his experience before grinding out victory against Scorpions’ Denis Iga.
Iga stretched his opponent to full length but a good show from Mubiru in the last two rounds swayed the judges in his favour.
Action continues today with Athens Olympian Brian Mayanja expected in the ring.
Over 100 boxers are taking part in the event.
