REGISTRATION of the Democratic Party (DP) has taken a new twist with Hajji Nasser Sebaggala’s faction saying they have applied to the Registrar General to register the party.
The DP president general, Dr. Paul Ssemoge-rere, in October picked forms and reserved the party name and symbols, blocking attempts by the suspended secretary general Mariano Drametu to register the party.
Drametu and DP vice-president Zachary Olum belong to the Sebaggala faction that convened the controversial meeting at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole on October 15, 2004, which resolved to register the party.
Olum told a press conference that they picked forms on December 17 and returned them to the registrar general’s office the following day after paying sh5,900 to Uganda Revenue Authority as required.
Santos Alima, the DP deputy national treasurer, showed journalists photocopies of receipts.
Sebaggala, former DP secretary general Robert Kitariko, UYD secretary general and Makindye East MP Michael Mabikke and Mukasa Mbidde attended the press conference at Rock Gardens in Kampala
“We wish to inform members that henceforth they should disregard certain self-seekers going around purporting to collect names for registration,” Olum said.
The Ssemogerere team is reportedly traversing the countryside collecting signatures for registration.
Olum said they had taken all measures for registering the party.
