SUGAR Corporation of Uganda (SCOUL) will increase daily production from 170 tonnes to 200 this year, the firm’s chief executive, S.C. Khanna, has said.

Khanna said this would increase the firm’s annual production from 46,800 tonnes in 2004 to 55,000.

“We achieved our target of increasing daily production to 170 tonnes by December 2004, from 140 tonnes in January the same year. We expect to increase production from 170 tonnes to 200 by May this year,” he said in an interview at the factory in Lugazi, recently.

Khanna said they would plant more sugar canes and boost outgrowers to achieve the target.

He said, “We have been getting 23% of sugar canes from outgrowers, but this will increase to 29%, while SCOUL will contribute 71%.”

Khanna said they would give out cane suckers, and technical assistance to outgrowers to increase production.

He urged the Government to limit sugar imported from Swaziland, Malawi, South Africa and Thailand. He said as a result of smuggled sugar, they failed to sell 1,200 tonnes of sugar last year.

Khanna said they won UEDCL’s award for best paying customer in the commercial category last year.
