Michael Okiror, one of the FUFA presidential candidates has attacked sports minister, Okello Oryem saying he was partisan and fuelling tribalism ahead of the February 5 polls.

“Our minister should not show partisan politics in football, he should take us all irrespective of our tribes”, Okiror said.

Okiror was addressing the press after a closed meeting with the Zone 7 delegates at Chicken Keiv Pub here. The meeting was organised by Peter Ssenkungu, a delegate from Masaka. Others came from Kalangala, Ssembabule and Rakai.

Okiror said that it was wrong for the minister to compare him to incumbent president, Denis Obua on grounds that they served in the same executive, and therefore electing him (Okiror) would not make any difference.

The media recently quoted Oryem saying Okiror and Obua were similar.

“That was an understatement. I'm not the same as Obua, I don't eat pork, I don't drink”.

He said he resigned as treasurer because Obua withdrew gate collections from Nakivubo at night after the U-23 match between Uganda and Sudan.

He said he did not want to continue working with a corrupt man. “If I was the same as Obua, I would not have resigned,”, he said.

He said he would set up regional offices and equip them with computers for proper coordination.

Salume Among adds that Okiror wants to revive football countrywide. “Our biggest problem is leadership,” he told Zone One delegates on Saturday at Golden Ark Hotel in Soroti. He said football had collapsed not only in Kampala but also in all districts due to poor management.

Katakwi, Kumi, Kotido, Nakapiripirit, Moroto and Soroti delegates promised to vote for him.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Mulindwa yesterday returned forms, becoming the second candidate to be nominated after Okiror.

FUFA returning officer David Agong received the papers showing that Masaka, Kamwenge and Apac had nominated Mulindwa, reports Norman Katende.
