NEIGHBOURS of Makerere University, who are the primary victims of violent student strikes, are to get official apologies from the university administration, reports Jude Etyang.

The University Chancellor, Prof Apolo Nsibambi, said he was saddened by the acts of hooliganism by the students and non-students during the strikes.

He said the university was working on a formular to apologise to the residents.

Nsibambi was on Sunday opening the new St. Francis Community Centre at the university, which he said would shape student behaviour and make them productive citizens.

The Archbishop of the Anglican church, the Rt. Rev. Luke Orombi, conducted a dedication service for the centre.

The facility has a 1,200-seat multi-purpose hall, a 1,000 seat cafeteria, children’s ministry rooms, counselling rooms and a community canteen.

Nsibambi praised the chaplain of St. Francis Chapel, the Rev. Canon Benon Mugarura, for using a fresh approach to worship, has which attracted many students.

He hailed the church community for collecting and accounting for the sh500m centre project.
Orombi thanked Nsibambi for supporting the centre.
