THE increased mango yield has been boosted by the introduction of new varieties, the director general of National Agricultural Research Organisation, Dr. Otim Nape said recently.
The different varieties like Edwards, Keint and Keith have played a very significant role in the multiplication of the mangoes.
Gard Turyamureeba, centre manager, Abi Agricultural Research in Arua, says farmers are looking at the new varieties as a way of fighting household poverty. The horticulture personnel at Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute Geoffrey Aisu says farmers are demanding the new varieties.
The new mango varieties grow within two to three years and given good care they have given splendid yields. The spacing is advisable to be 40cm by 40cm and continued pruning and trimming gives the farmer good yields. The growing of indigenous mangoes in the country dates back to the 1940s.
Mango trees were introduced in Luwero district by world war veterans and it became a policy for every homestead in the district to have at least a mango tree.
