Acana, Acholi’s hereditary leader

On Saturday Gulu, witnessed the enthronement of the Paramount chief of Acholi, Rwot David Onen Acana II and the Acholi cultural council at Kaunda Grounds, Bardege. Acana II is the 24th hereditary leader in a dynastic line that started in 1420 with Rwot Luo in Shiluk, Bar-el-Gahazel, Sudan.

On Saturday Gulu, witnessed the enthronement of the Paramount chief of Acholi, Rwot David Onen Acana II and the Acholi cultural council at Kaunda Grounds, Bardege. Acana II is the 24th hereditary leader in a dynastic line that started in 1420 with Rwot Luo in Shiluk, Bar-el-Gahazel, Sudan. Thousands of cheering people braved the scotching sun to witness the coronation ceremony.
The ceremony was graced by the bwola, an Acholi royal dance and other traditional dances. The dancers entertained the cheerful crowds, who ululated and applauded with drumming when the paramount chief was crowned.
Acana was clad in a silk blue robe decorated by golden embroidery and a matching headdress. The ceremony was graced by President Yoweri Museveni, security minister Betty Akech Okullu, minister for international affairs, Henry Oryem Okello. Also minister for northern Uganda rehabilitation, Grace Akello, peace broker Betty Bigombe, member of the diplomatic community, foreign dignitaries, religious leaders, district officials from the neighbouring districts and senior army officers were present.
