By Alfred Wasike THE multi-billion shilling science-based Gulu University was launched by President Yoweri Museveni on Saturday. Museveni also installed Dr. Martin Aliker, a dental surgeon and businessman, as the first chancellor of the three-year-old university. Aliker vowed to “help the university grow to greater heights.†Gulu University targets science teacher education, medicine, agriculture and environment, technology, business, rural transformation and conflict studies. “The university and others in Uganda should think very carefully about designing courses that will enable our society to harness development,†said Museveni, who also unveiled plaques for new buildings, including a library. “Teach nursing so that our children can go and nurse the Europeans. We need courses like geology, engineering and petroleum exploration. Lets produce people with a purpose,†he said. He said, “Tertiary institutions should apply knowledge to enable society to manage key areas like business and politics. Knowledge can also be used for leisure, recreation, entertainment and recording events in human history.†Ends
