Apology
In our January 21 story on P4 titled “Mumbere security beefed up,” we wrongly stated that the Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, briefly visited Bakonzo cultural leader Charles Wesley Mumbere at his home in Kasese. The Prime Minister has now advised us that “this is a blatant lie. I have not seen Mumbere. In fact I have never met him in my life. There is nothing wrong with meeting him but I just have not done so.” We apologise to the Prime Minister for falsely reporting that he had been in Kasese and met Mumbere there.

KAMPALA — Wrong data supplied by headteachers frustrates the government’s efforts in providing capitation grants to schools, the acting principal statistician in the education ministry has said. Vincent Ssozi said it was “unfortunate that we have still failed to get the required statistics and data from secondary schools because most don’t comply.” He was on Wednesday speaking at the on-going annual headteachers conference at Mengo Secondary school.

Policy due
KAMPALA — A national policy to promote adult learning in the country is expected to be completed by august, a senior literacy officer at the gender and social development ministry has said. Imelda Kyaringabira on Thursday said the policy would also address poverty eradication.

Police irked
MUKONO — The district CID chief has warned parents against taking bribes from defilement suspects. Joseph Edopa said this had dented the possibility of stamping out defilement in the district. He was last week releasing the 2004 crime report in the district at his office. Edopa said defilement topped the crime list.

Movt chief
KAYUNGA — Authorities have refuted allegations that health state state minister Mike Mukula influenced the election of a new district Movement chairman. Kirasa parish chief Moses Ssekasi said on Wednesday they only elected the kisanja (third term) mobilisation chairman. He added that the LC5 chief, Steven Dagada, was still the district Movement chairman.
