TWO Ugandans accused of robbing a Tanzanian bank of over sh10b have survived extradition to Tanzania for trial, after a Ugandan court acquitted them of the charge, writes Hillary Kiirya.

Charles Malomero, 42 and Shabana Wayobana, 38, were set free by Nakawa chief magistrate Margaret Mafabi.

“I find no evidence whatsoever connecting the two people to the offences they are charged with and I accordingly acquit them of the offence and set them free,” Mafabi ruled.

The duo’s lawyer, McDusman Kabega, expressed satisfaction with the ruling.

Tanzania’s Director of Public Prosecution had written to his Ugandan counterpart, requesting for the extradition of the two men.
The duo was jointly charged with robbing the National Bank of Commerce Limited, Moshi Branch, of sh5.3b on May 21, 2004.

After the court session, officials from the Violent Crime crackdown Unit stormed the court premises, waiting to have the two men re-arrested.
