SUDANESE Vice-President, Col. Dr. John Garang has promised to propose to the Khartoum government construction and tarmacking a highway from southern Sudan via Yei to Gulu to provide a direct link with Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

He said this would restore and foster bilateral trade and quick communication and usher in developments in the two countries.

He said development had been bogged down by Africa’s oldest war between Sudanese government forces and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) for over 50 years.

While addressing residents at Kaunda Ground in Gulu town on Thursday, Garang said, “With the hope that the signing of the peace agreement between the SPLA and the Sudan government in Nairobi, Kenya on January 9, 2004 will translate into peace, we should now think of opening a tarmack road link between Southern Sudan and northern Uganda’s capital of Gulu.”

Garang arrived in Uganda on Tuesday to attend the NRA 19th anniversary celebrations.
