BANNET Asingura, 16, has already shaped his career. Although his mother, Jolly Mugisha, had wanted him to study law, Asingura, God willing, will be a medical doctor.
“Right from primary three, I have dreamt of becoming a doctor although my mum wants me to take law,” he says.

Asingura, a former student of Ntare School in Mbarara, scored aggregate eight in the best eight subjects to scoop the second position in Mbarara district.

His former teachers at Ntare said Asingura was not an achiever in education only, but also in other fields. In 2003, he was selected the school’s sportsman after emerging the top scorer during inter-post-primary schools games competition.

Asingura’s sister, Philpa Ampire, also scored aggregate eight last year to become one of the top students in Mbarara. She is now at Gayaza High School taking Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Their first born is studying human medicine at Mbarara University of science and technology.

President Museveni’s advocacy for science subjects seems to be taking root. Almost 50% of the students, who have excelled in the just released 2004 results in PLE and UCE indicate they would offer sciences at the university.
