OUTGOING Mandela National Stadium, Namboole chairman Henry Balamaze Lwanga on January 12 locked out National Council of Sports (NCS) officials who had gone to carry out stocktaking.

Sabiiti Muwanga reports that the officials led by Sam Walusimbi had gone to check on the stadium assets after NCS terminated Balamaze’s contract. The veteran sports administrator is to hand over the facility to the education and sports ministry on February 17.

“We felt it necessary, after we received orders from the ministry to terminate his (Balamaze) contract, that we check on the assets and conditions of the facility. But he denied us entry,” Justin Ligyalingi, NCS assistant general secretary said.

There has in the past been a struggle between Namboole management and NCS over whether the latter should oversee the stadium operations.

Balamaze has always said that the national sports body had no jurisdiction over the stadium and his committee reported directly to the minister in charge.

“That man has been uncooperative since he was appointed to manage Namboole and we have had a lot of problems with him,” another official said.
