KASSIM Ouma’s camp bagged US $1m (sh1.7bn) after the boxer retained his IBF junior middleweight title by beating Ghana’s Kofi Jantuah on Saturday. The money will be shared by his manager, promoters and trainers.

“He received a big payday — US $1m — and that is good money for him,” Celestino Mindra, WBC board member said.

“He showed the world that he is a great fighter and he can go to greater heights with this win.”

Mindra was supervisor for the main event between homeboy Arturo Gatti and Jesse James Leija. Ouma was making his first defense of the title he won last year when he beat American Verno Phillips.

His manager, a trainer, an assistant and cutmen will share the purse.
“He is in the right shape to unify the division,” Mindra said. “He has told me he wants to become the first Ugandan boxer to do this”.

Ouma also struck a deal with HBO TV, which pays him $150,000 (sh260m) for every fight of his that features on pay television.

Mindra however was non-committal to comment of Ouma’s return to his homeland Uganda.

WBC recently stripped champion Winky Wright after he failed to agree on a mandatory defense against interim WBC champion Javier Castillejo of Spain. He was also stripped off his World Boxing Association belt.

Wright will fight Felix Trinidad in May in a fight brokered by Don King.
