OVER 250 athletes will be fighting for the 18 slots available on the national team for the World Cross Country championship.

MTN has bankrolled the event due today at Ndejje with sh3m prize money. It will help select a team for the World event in Paris in March.

The winners of the six categories, which include short, junior and senior races for both men and women will also walk off with fully connected mobile phones.

“In the past, athletes have been running for a noble cause but with cash prizes at a stake, we expect not only a big turn up, but also a good competition,” explained Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.

Ayikoru said that though some of the stars are currently out of the country, there are more new stars who are ready to give the remaining seniors a run for their money.

Last year’s champion Boniface Kiprop and Wilson Kipkemei are in Europe, where they are preparing for the France event.

Athlete Joseph Nsubuga is also in Sudan where he will be taking part in the region half marathon today.
