UGANDA is looking for ways of expanding the art and crafts market internationally, trade minister Daudi Migereko, has said.

Migereko said this while opening a forum organised by the Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association and Private Sector Foundation Uganda on the theme, ‘Assisting Women Entrepreneurs Access Global Markets’ at the body’s head offices on Lumumba Avenue in Kampala recently.

The forum was attended by over 100 businesswomen in art and crafts, who exhibited their products.

“A market plan for Uganda’s handcrafts to penetrate the US and Canadian markets has been prepared by the Uganda Export Promotions Board and an external consultant is being sought to assist in this,” he said.

Migereko said, “The export initiatives we have started will see Uganda’s art and crafts sector reach the levels of India, Sri Lanka, Ghana and Egypt in gender poverty reduction.”

He said the office of the first lady and the Micro-Finance Outreach Programme of the finance ministry had engaged a Ghanaian expert to carry out a supply survey and product development of Uganda’s art and crafts.
