SEVERAL local construction firms have tried to induce transport state minister Andruale Awuzu to win government road construction tenders, reports Catherine Ntabadde.

Awuzu, who is in charge of the road maintenance unit in the works ministry, on Thursday said there was a lot of corruption in the construction industry.

He said officials of construction firms had on several occasions told him to “pretend” as one of the owners of the construction companies so that they could win tenders.

Awuzu, however, did not reveal the names of the firms but said some of the companies were from his home district, Arua.

“People say politicians are very corrupt but you people are the most corrupt. I have been tempted by contractors but I have refused to respond to their requests,” he said.
Awuzu said this at a stakeholders’ workshop on capacity building of the local construction industry at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

Works minister Eng. John Nasasira opened the workshop.
