A cassava flour processing plant has been installed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Nakasongola district.

The sh68m plant was set up with the support of Farm Africa, a United Kingdom NGO.

“Farm Africa increased Cassava production in the district with a sh90m boost to farmers, which they used to acquire new cassava varieties like NASE1-12 from Namulonge Research institute,” Meya Kayima, the Farm Africa country director, said.

“We are looking forward to introducing a processing technology package appropriate to rural areas and to increase farmers’ incomes through processing and marketing of high quality cassava flour by farmers’ groups,” said Huruo Tsuchiya, who led the Japanese team.

Agriculture minister Janat Mukwaya, who launched the project, called upon farmers to devise new farming systems to yield more from a small pieces of land.
She warned against burning of bushes and appealed to district officials to formulate punitive measures to avert people from the act.

Mukwaya advised women to use family planning and utilise the government Functional Adult Literacy programmes.

Japanese ambassador Yoshitaka Kitazawa said other JICA projects included rice plants in Luweero and Kamuli districts and a fruit processing plant in Kayunga district.
