SURVIVORS of the Barlonyo massacre were on Monday moved when the Vice-President joined them in commemoration of the tragedy and shook their hands one by one.

Prof. Gilbert Bukenya said, “I am here to pray with you and ask God’s forgiveness for anything that would have deterred the victims of this massacre from entering heaven.”

Over 200 survivors were giving testimonies of how the attack occurred, when Bukenya shot up and joined them, to the surprise of his security and other mourners.

“We share with you the suffering you went through,” he said at the former internally displaced people’s camp in Lira district on Monday.

He was officiating at a service to mark one year since the Barlonyo massacre by LRA insurgents.

Bukenya called for love and respect for one another, if peace was to prevail.
One of the survivors, a cripple, was speechless when Bukenya crouched to ask him how he survived the attack.
“It was God’s plan to deliver me from the killers,” the man said.

“This was a barbaric punishment by the rebels,” Bukenya said before calling for a minute of silence.

He said ugandans had suffered enough in the hands of rebels. “This has caused hatred and bitterness,” Bukenya said.
