THE declining rates in science performance in the country is worrying senior scientists, and they think something must be done to avert the trend.
“the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) is very concerned at the deteriorating performance of science and mathematics in the country. We recommend that the government intervenes,” said UNAS president Prof. Edward Mugambi.
He was on Wednesday addressing UNAS members during a stakeholders sensitisation workshop at the Faculty of Agriculture at Makerere University.
“The key factors to poor performance of sciences are the teachers, the inadequate numbers and their quality,” said the mathematics professor.
“We recommend that the government conducts a research into the poor performance as soon as possible,” Mugambi added.
He also asked the government to recognise and have UNAS legally registered.
“It is a set back to the association. We just cannot do much because we are not yet recognised by the government. Should we get that status, we shall not wait for the government but will carry out the research by ourselves,” Mugambi said.
He said UNAS would help the government develop and nurture high-level scientific and technological manpower.
