PRIME Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi has ruled out seeking an elective political office.

Nsibambi, the Makerere University chancellor, was on Friday speaking at a farewell for former Makerere vice-chancellor Prof. John Ssebuwufu and his deputy, Prof. Epelu Opio.

He appealed to university council chairman Prof. Gabriel Opio not to return to elective politics but dedicate himself to serving Makerere.

Opio, who was a state minister for finance in 2001, lost his Samia Bugwe South seat to Simon Mayende, now state minister for higher education.

“I have worked very closely with Prof. Opio. He is a former academician and a former politician. I hope he will not go back to politics but stick to this job,” said Nsibambi.

Other former Makerere officials who were bid farewell were Entebbe Municipality MP David Matovu (university council chairman), Lady Justice Engena Maitum (university Council vice-chairperson), Eng. Steven Kagoda (appointments board chairperson), Ndorwa East MP Avitus Tibarimbasa, (former university secretary) and James Mugasha, who was the university librarian.
