THE senior presidential adviser on poverty alleviation, Joan Kakwenzire, has challenged leaders to sensitise people on the need for food security.

Kakwenzire said the practice would enable households to save some money to reduce poverty.

“The money that would have been spent on buying food would be used to initiate income generating projects to alleviate poverty,” she said.

Kakwenzire was speaking during Women’s Day celebrations at Busoga Square in Jinja district on Tuesday. The theme was ‘Women’s role in wealth creation at the household level’.

Kakwenzire launched the presidential initiative against hunger and poverty in Kainogoga village, Mafubira sub-county, where she opened a two-acre demonstration garden.

The initiative is aimed at improving household incomes through increased agricultural production and food security in homes.

Kakwenzire urged women to utilise the available natural resources to create wealth, saying equality would be meaningless without economic empowerment.

She warned against environmental degradation.

Janet Kyemba, a Jinja municipal councillor, said at least 80% of the wealth in homesteads was created by women but their potential was being underrated.

“Women are pillars in homes. Our roles should be recognised,” she said
Resident district commissioner Mugisha Muhwezi attended.
