CITY tycoon Hassan Bassajjabalaba has taken over the management of Bugolobi Central Market.

The market has over 500 shops and stalls.

It was previously run by traders under Bugolobi Cooperative Society.

Bassajjabalaba runs Nakasero and St Balukuddembe Markets, Kampala’s biggest shopping centres.

Herbert Bashasha, Hacks Express Ltd’s general manager, the firm managing Bassajjabalaba’s markets, said Hacks Express acquired a three-year lease to run the market from Kampala City Council last week at a cost of sh42m per year.

“We went through the normal bidding procedures and won the bid to run the market. We have already paid up for a year,” he said.

Bashasha said the market would be re-developed to a fully-fledged trading zone.
He said sh500m would be spent on re-development.

“We want to improve the existing stalls, lighting and water systems and hire a private security firm,” Bashasha said.

He said client parking area would be improved.
