IGANGA town has lost its only stadium after the owner divided it into 16 plots for sale at sh64m each.

A source said plots of a similar size cost between sh3.5m and sh4m.

District sports officer Fred Kirege on Thursday said one Scholastica rep-ortedly owns the land on which the Saza grounds stadium is located.

The goal posts have already been removed and nearby trees cut, leaving the recently surveyed plots awaiting sale.

Ali Nantamu, the LCI chairman of Bulubandi central zone, said the owners had documents from court allowing them to develop their land.

“The owners offered Saza grounds to the sub-county in 1938 for sports. The town council later took over the land under an arrangement with the owners to share dividends,” Nantamu said.

He said the council failed to live up to its agreement, prompting the owners to terminate the arrangement in court so as to use the land more profitably.

Iganga town clerk Batwawula Musasizi said the stadium had been re-possessed.
“We have alerted the police and investigations have taken off,” he said.
