VICTORIA Insglass, a firm contracted by KCC to collect taxes in Central Division, Kampala, has bolted about 200 shops since March 1.

“The period for enforcement, which kicked off on March 1 has meant that whoever did not renew their trading license by January 1, and has not cleared yet, is a defaulter and cannot be allowed to transact business in this area,” said Stephen Sserunjogi, the firm’s special projects manager.

He said so far 4,000, or 26% of businesses out of the 15,000 operating in the Division had cleared their tax obligations.

Sserunjogi said the affected shops, which are located on and around Market Street, Luwum and Ben Kiwanuka Streets, will not be re-opened until they settle their liabilities.

“For the non compliant, we plan to drag them to KCC court, where they will be charged with tax default, under the Trade (Licensing) Act of 1969 and Local Government Act of 1997,” he said.

Sserunjogi said mobile fuel transporters as some of the big defaulters, who always refer to the companies that contract them.
