MUBENDE — Bad leadership is the major cause of poverty in Uganda, the executive director of the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative has said. Livingstone Ssewanyana said, “The people are crying. Poverty has reached alarming rates due to bad leadership. Uganda would not be that bad if we had good leadership.” he said this at a paralegal training course at Enro Hotel in Mityana on Friday.

Defiler jailed
KAMPALA — The High court on Thursday sentenced a herdsman to one-and-half years in jail for defilement. Justice Vincent Kagaba convicted James Batalingaya of Kilanganzi in Luweero district after he pleaded guilty. Batalingaya defiled a 13-year-old girl on December 20, 2003.

Court frees
KAMPALA — The Buganda Road Court has freed a Rwandese national who was facing charges of theft and burglary. Kassim Rujenera of Namasuba, Kikajo zone, was freed after the Director of Public Prosecution dropped charges against him. He had been charged with stealing Arthur rwanykiro’s mobile phone on September 27, 2004.

Farmer held
KAMPALA — A 60-year-old woman was on Thursday charged with murder. Rukia Kyikazika of Wakiso denied the charges before City Hall Grade One magistrate and was remanded in Luzira prison. prosecution said Kyikazika murdered Joseph Mubiru on January 23.
