Fire gutted about 100 houses at Kakyanga landing site in Bukakkata sub-county, Masaka district, destroying property worth millions of shillings, reports Eddie Ssejjoba.
The fire that started at 8:30pm on Thursday was sparked off by a candle in one of the wooden houses.
Residents screamed as they ran to save their property, most of which was stolen by thugs who took advantage of the commotion.
The area chairman, Emmanuel Ssempijja, said some people got minor burns as they tried to save their property.
One of the victims, Edith Namaganda, said she had just stocked her shop with beer, soda, blankets, mattresses and other items
LC officials banned the re-building of wooden houses, saying they were prone to fire.
Residents appealed to authorities to provide them with necessities like iron sheets and house hold items.
