The UPDF launched night attacks on the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), killing 16 rebels over the Easter weekend, reports Frank Mugabi.
The UPDF 4th division spokesman, Lt. Tabaro Kiconco, on Monday said they recovered 22 sub-machine guns.
He said the rebels were killed during ground and night ambushes in Latwong Forest and Labongo Gali.
Others were killed along River Odek and Pararo on the Gulu-Kitgum Road.
Kiconco said the night attacks were successful against rebels who had changed their tactics to sneaking out of their hideouts in the night.
He said five rebels were captured in different battles at Cwero and along River Ayago in Anaka sub-county as they tried to infiltrate Murchison Falls Park.
Kiconco said 29 fighters surrendered between March 21 and March 28. Four of them surrendered to the UPDF in Olwala village Lamogi sub-county while others gave up arms in Palaro and Pabbo areas.
However, two UPDF troops were injured in crossfire as they repulsed an attempted attack by the rebels on Namakora detachment.
He said the recent abductions in Gulu and Adjumani districts showed that the rebels were desperate to attack civilian spots to avenge the current defections and fatal attacks on them.
