EMBATTLED ex-FUFA president Denis Obua was yesterday charged with embezzlement of sh116m and causing financial loss and remanded in Luzira prison.
Buganda road chief magistrate Margaret Tibulya remanded Obua until April 15 when the case will come up for mention.
“You do not have the right to bail by the virtue of the charges against you,” Tibulya said.
Obua can only seek bail in high court.
Obua, who was accompanied to court by his right-hand men Yusuf Chuni and Livingstone Lajan, denied both charges.
“How? It can’t be true. It was meant to pay allowances,” Obua loudly said as he shook his head after the embezzlement charge was read to him.
When the charge of causing financial loss was also read to Obua , he answered, “No. It is not true.”
The prosecution alleged that between 1999 and 2001 at FUFA offices Obua and general secretary Haruna Mawanda embezzled sh116m belonging to FUFA.
The suit is as a result of the Inspector of Government (IGG) report which said that Mawanda failed to account for sh12.6m of the sh116m in question while Obua failed to account for the bigger part of the sh116m.
Prosecution further alleged that Obua and Mawanda being officers of FUFA in the course of their duty caused financial loss to the same body by putting official funds to their own use.
Mawanda, who is jointly accused with Obua, did not show up in court.
Mawanda’s lawyer Fred Makada of Makada and Partners Advocates and Solicitors said he had instructions that Mawanda was bedridden and could not appear in court.
Obua, who was driven to court by his lawyer Patrick Furah, yelled at photo-journalists.
“What are you up to? Why are you following me all the time,” Obua shouted as the cameramen continued taking his pictures.
Obua retained his smile even as he was taken to Luzira aboard a prisons bus at 3pm.
Express’ David Obua, also son to the embattled Obua, witnessed his fathers departure to prison.
Leo Adraa arrived ten minutes late after Obua had climbed the Luzira bus and was unable to catch a glimpse of the troubled CECAFA boss.
Obua and Mawanda fell in trouble recently when a pressure group Save Our Soccer (SOS) sued the duo for mismanaging the game and causing financial loss.
Government also acted swiftly and through Education and Sports minister Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, disbanded the FUFA executive and asked NCS to take over temporarily.
