RELIGIOUS and Government leaders in Kasese have urged the people in the Rwenzori region to reflect on Pope John Paul’s message of unity and peace when he visited the district in 1993.

“When the Pope was here in 1993, he urged us to work together irrespective of our ethnic, social, political and religious differences,” the Rt. Rev. Egidio Nkaijanabwo, the leader of the Catholic Church in Kasese, said on Monday.

In an interview in his office at the Diocesan Headquarters in Kasese town, the Bishop said, “This message could be utilised to resolve social conflicts like the one around the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu”.

He regretted the division, which he said had been created by the Obusinga issue in the region, calling for amicable resolution of the matter.

He described Pope John Paul 11 as a friend of Kasese and the people in the Rwenzori region.

The Anglican Bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese, Jackson Nzerebende, said when the late pontiff visited Kasese, his teaching was not beneficial to the Catholics only but to all mankind, especially when he stressed the need for unity among all the people of God.

Bakonzo cultural leader Charles Mumbere said, “Pope John Paul II will be remembered as a vanguard for peace, unity, love and justice.”

He said, “We join the Roman Catholic Church in mourning the death of the Pope.”
