MBARARA municipal council has started tarmacking the 2.4km Victor Bwana Road as a fifth street in Mbarara town.
The road is in addition to Mbarara High Street, Mbaguta Street, Bishop Wills Street and Bucuku Street.
The municipal council has approved a plan to extend the town by seven miles on all sides.
Mayor Wilson Tumwine said at the site on Wednesday that the expansion and tarmacking of the road would cost over sh460m.
“This road is funded by the municipal council. But we don’t have enough money to finish the project and the graduated tax is going to be scrapped effective June. People should be told that the tax is an obligation,” he said.
Tumwine said the people should be told the truth about the use of graduated tax other than promising them to scrap it, yet it is the main source of income for local governments.
