DEO Akope’s victory at the Swift Commodities sponsored Lugazi golf Open puts pressure on the leading pack in the 2005 stropkeplay championships.

Former national champion Akope showed the nerve to deliver at a critical moment by beating Uganda telecom sponsored Denis Anguyo in a play-off on hole number 1.

Akope birdied the hole as his rival dropped a shot to claim victory.

The scratch players had drawn level at 137 after 36 holes in the fourth Uganda Golf Union stroke play event.

“It was a tough event, I needed this win to close the gap on my rivals,” Akope said.

Akope is level on points with Charles Yokwe and close on heels of Godfrey Mande and Stephen Kasaija, the other contenders for the championship crown.

Akope’s success ended a brilliant run by the dfcu bank sponsored Kasaija.

Fort Portal star Kasaija had gathered maximum points after taking the UGU President’s Cup, the Crane Kigezi Open and the Western Open.

There are 14 more events to go, the next being the Kinyara Open due next month.
