Pope John Paul II was the champion of peace, justice and reconciliation and a promoter of love the world over, the Archbishop of Gulu has said.
John Baptist Odama said the Pope’s death should enhance the hope of restoring peace, reconciliation and love among the people of northern Uganda.
He said John Paul II was the first Pope to visit and pray with the war-affected people of Acholi.
The Pope visited Acholi on February 6, 1993, where the Holy Father held a two-hour peace prayer at Kaunda grounds in Gulu municipality. Uganda was one of 129 countries in which Pope John Paul II held reconciliationy prayers, Msgn Matthew Odong said.
Odong said many global dignitaries described the late John Paul II as a fighter for peace, justice and equality.
He quoted President Yoweri Museveni as having called the pope a freedom fighter.
