UGANDA has backed a proposal by the African Union for the continent to have two permanent seats on the UN Security Council.
Uganda’s permanent representative to the UN, Francis Butagira, in a statement delivered to the General Assembly recently, said the issue of reforms within the Security Council were long overdue.
“Africa has taken a position on this, which my delegation wholly endorses. We ask for at least two permanent members with veto and five non-permanent seats,” Butagira said.
The Security Council, whose primary role is to maintain international peace and security and investigate international disputes, has 15 members.
China, Russia, France, UK and US are the permanent members, while Tanzania, Algeria, Romania, Philippines, Japan, Greece, Denmark, Brazil, Benin and Argentina hold non-permanent seats. A decision on substantive matters requires nine votes.
