Hair, glamour fest to bail out orphans

It is all about glitz, glamour and beauty at the East Africa Glamour and Beauty expo at Garden City shopping centre which started from April 12 and ends tomorrow, Saturday April 16 About 15,000 fashion fans are expected a day at the event, organised by Glamour World, a local events management company.

Steven Mukisa, the coordinator of the event says, “This unique and glamorous event is aimed at bringing together the cosmetics manufacturers, professional hair designers, fashion designers and beauty schools.

People have every reason to expect a lot of ‘world excitement’ on the artistic level as well as quality education which is truly cost-effective for glamour and beauty professionals in East Africa.”

He says there are other activities like a hair-styling competitions, makeovers, workshops and giveaways (gift packs with samples of various products on exhibition from manufacturers). Cosmetics companies will award winners prizes.

Twelve awards will be given out during the exhibition. These include, Stylist of the year; Braid Stylist of the year; Creative Stylist of the year; Barber Olympics Championships; Colorist of the year; Student Stylist of the year; Weave of the year and Best Radio Presenter Hair Style of the year.

Others include Best TV Personality Hair Style of the year; Best Musicians’ Hair Style of the year; Best Politician Hair Style of the year and Best Professional Image Driven salon.

The competition will be held from 7:00pm to 9:00pm daily.

The quarterfinals, which will determine the top 21 contestants will be held today, while the Saturday V.I.P show will see the contestants reduced to 14. The Awards night will be held on Sunday.

But the annual show will be modeled after other record-breaking hair, beauty and glamour exhibitions like Beauty Africa exhibition in South Africa and Afro hair show in London, Britain has a much more noble cause attached to it.

“The objective of each annual show is to build at least one orphanage school and home in different districts,” says Mukisa.

“This year we are working together with the mayor of Lugazi in Mukono district, Said Mubarak, to fundraise for the building of Good Hope HIV/AIDS orphanage school/home together with support from both international and national stakeholders in the glamour industry.

These include Sof ‘n Free, Dark and Lovely, WBS T.V, Sanyu FM and True African.”
