FEARING for the worst in their ICC three-day Intercontinental cup game against Uganda in Kampala next weekend, Kenya announced on Thursday it would make arrangements for all-rounder Thomas Odoyo be flown to Uganda from London to bolster the team.

“We are not taking any chances against our perennial neighbours, thus the need to field a strong team,” head coach, Mudassar Nazar said while also announcing that team captain Steve Tikolo would delay leaving for his UK club until after the encounter.

Odoyo and Tikolo have landed professional careers in London with Reads CC and Haverigg CC respectively.

The move to look for the services of the duo in Kampala followed reports that opener Ravindu Shah is out of the team owing to injury.

Nazar said he respected the Ugandans, thus the need to be cautious as they plan on strategies of taming them before their own supporters.

Ronnie Kintu adds that as the intercontinental tie approaches, Uganda national coach Henry Okecho aims to put more emphasis on the bowlers to ensure victory for Uganda next weekend.

The national team play their final trial two-day game in preparation for their archrivals Kenya who arrive in the country on Thursday for the three-day encounter at Lugogo grass wicket.

“The batting is just good enough to test Kenya and I have the confidence that with more emphasis on the bowling, the boys are capable of running over the visitors,” Okecho said.

Okecho applauded the excellent batting displayed by the team in the previous trial match last weekend.
He singled out explosive player Joel Olweny, devastating Junior Kwebiiha, Nand Kishor and South African trained Kenneth Kamyuka for maintaining their prowess with the bat alongside others.

The bowling performances of Kamyuka, Richard Okia, Patrick Ochan, Emmanuel Issaneez alongside Baig Akbar and Frank Nsubuga will be under stern scrutiny today.

Lawrence Sematimba will also be carefully observed behind the stumps after contenders Keith Legesi and Bharat Godhadra were dropped.

The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has meanwhile, purchased new covers for the Lugogo wicket ahead of the tie.

UCA organising secretary Richard Sempa confirmed the new covers would cover the 15-yard space compared to the old ones that were only covering the four strips of the oval.

UCA also plans to equip the press box at Lugogo ahead of the tie.
