SOUTH AFRICAN umpires will officiate the highly billed three-day ICC Intercontinental Cup encounter between Uganda and Kenya starting Friday at Lugogo oval. The tie will be the first ICC sanctioned match at the new Lugogo grass wicket.

Two umpires from Johannesburg Gajjar Mookesh and Hendrikse Earl will handle what is a grudge match by the ever-improving Ugandan cricketers against long time rivals Kenya, who had One Day Status in the game.

The ICC Intercontinental Cup is an annual first class cricket tournament aimed at helping associate member countries from each region cope with the long version of the game and achieving the international test status. The top team from each region qualifies for the semi-finals.

In the qualifiers for the Africa region in the inaugural competition last year, Uganda beat Namibia but went on to lose to Kenya missing a last four berth narrowly. Scotland won the event last year in a final hosted in United Arab Emirates.

The Kenyan squad and ICC official Hoosain Ayob arrive in the country on Thursday.

Uganda Cricket Association led by Ivan Kyayonka will today name the team to take on Kenya over three days, and Namibia May 14.
UCA has refurbished Lugogo for the key meet.

* Wakiso’s Budo Junior Primary School and Namahuga Primary School from Kasese were the dominant teams in the 5th MTN/Stanbic mini-cricket championship at the Kyambogo Oval on Saturday.

Budo Junior bagged the U-14 boys’ category and U-11 girls, beating Namahuga and Nakatunya Primary School from Soroti.

Namahuga won the U-14 girls category, overcoming Iganga’s Kigulu Primary School while Iganga Primary School nipped Namahuga to win the U-11 boys category.
The tournament shelved most of the delicate rules of cricket to allow everyone participate.

The tournament was sponsored by MTN and Stanbic, with KKL, National Council of Sports and Strogen Ltd offering material assistance.
