Women need men’s support and respect

SIR — Men should not fear change among Ugandan women. Ugandan women are some of the freest women I know. We started voting at the same time with men unlike in Europe and North America where they were allowed franchise almost 100 years after men. However, some traditions such as wife beating are some of the vices that women need to fight. Another thing men use as a tool to degrade women is polygamy. Women who agree to become second wives undermine the cause for women. Single parenthood is usually not by choice.
Nevertheless we could focus on the strengths of single parents, especially those who educate and bring up their children singlehanded instead of deserting them. Other people may advocate gradual change, but issues such as violence against women in the home need to be urgently addressed. Fashions are becoming universal and we cannot restrict women as to what they should or should not wear.
I appeal to men to value women as persons with equal rights.
Women need men’s support to become more visible socially, politically and economically.
