Police block
KAMPALA - The Police have denied MP Ken Lukyamuzi permission to demonstrate against high power tariffs. The commissioner-in-charge of operations, Godfrey Bangirana, yesterday wrote to lukyamuzi stopping the planned demonstration. Bangirana said, "You are not to demonstrate until the petition now before court, contesting power tariffs, is heard and a ruling given."

New envoy
KAMPALA - The British government has appointed Jean Francois Gordon High Commissioner to Uganda. He replaces Adam Wood, who was transferred to Nairobi, a statement issued by the British High commission said yesterday. The statement said Gordon would take up his new office in July.

Bwindi case
KAMPALA - A businessman, who was arrested following the massacre of eight foreign tourists in Bwindi forest, has sued the Government seeking sh22m for unlawful arrest and malicious prosecution. Hakim Mwesigye of Ntungamo said a month after his arrest, he was unjustifiably charged with impersonation and retaining stolen property.

Hearing set
KAMPALA - Court yesterday fixed May 17 to hear MPs Reagan Okumu (Aswa) and Michael Ocula's (Kilak) bail application. Justice Ssempa Lugayizi fixed the hearing on the request of the MPs' lawyer, Sam Njuba. Charged with the murder of Pabbo LC3 chairman Alfred bongomin, the MPs applied for bail to represent their constituents.

Riot case on
KAMPALA - 118 Makerere University students who reportedly rioted after a taxi run over their colleague go on trial today. Buganda Road Court has set aside three days to hear the case after the inquiries were completed. The students are being accused of rioting. The case will be heard on May 13, 16, and 17 before magistrate Olive Kazwaare.

Man killed
KAMULI - A jilted man wielding a panga attacked another, aged 60, and chopped his head into two. The suspect, now under arrest, accused the victim of calling him impotent. The incident occurred in Kaliro town council on Tuesday.

Kabaka sad
MENGO - Kabaka Ronald Mutebi has expressed sorrow at the death of Busiro south MP Patrick Musisi. In a condolence message to the widow, Catherine Musisi, yesterday, the Katikkiro, Joseph Ssemwogerere, said the Kabaka was saddened by the death. Musisi died early yesterday.

Kiyingi raps
RAKAI - Former internal affairs state minister Sarah Kiyingi Namusoke has criticised the government for pushing for a referendum on change of political systems. She said said the referendum could be a trick by the government to divert huge sums of money. Kiyingi, the district Woman MP, said this during her recent tour of Lyantonde sub-county. She also apposed a third term for the President.

Engola calls
PADER - Lira district Movement chairman Sam Engola has advised the Acholi to support the NRM and give President Yoweri Museveni a third term in the 2006 presidential elections. Engola was addressing residents of Corner Kilak camp in Aruu county on Sunday.

Court orders
KAMPALA - Court summoned Makindye East MP Michael Mabikke on Wednesday to explain why he failed to pay sh4.8m to Democratic Party lawyer Erias lukwago. Lukwago asked the High Court to order Mabikke's arrest for failure to clear the debt. Mabikke is expected in court on May 25.

UPC to rally
KAMPALA - The Uganda People's congress (UPC) is to hold two rallies this weekend. UPC has not held legal public rallies since it left power in July 1985. A rally will be held today at Makerere university's Nkrumah Hall, and another at Rwentuha in bushenyi district, tomorrow.

Bishop calls
THE Bishop of Lugazi diocese, Dr. Matthias Sekamanya, has attributed increasing drug abuse among the youth to weak legislation.
Sekamanya was addressing a congregation after the Sunday service at Kangulumira Catholic parish, Kayunga.

Kutesa tips

Concert plan
KAMPALA — The Uganda Reach the Aged association (URAA) is to hold a fundraising concert to aid elderly persons who care for orphans and children infected with HIV/AIDS. Sh100m is needed. Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala is expected to be one of the models to display fashions of the 1940s and 50s at the concert on May 28, a statement issued by URAA chief executive officer Deborah Kaijuka said last week.

MP slams
KAMPALA — The US policy urging countries to promote abstinence and faithfulness at the expense of condoms will not stop HIV/AIDS in Uganda, parliamentary AIDS committee chairperson Dr. Elioda tumwesigye said on Tuesday.
