AN array of strong rivals await Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke play championship leader Stephen Kasaija in the Kinyara Open golf tournament that tees off in Masindi this morning.

The dfcu bank sponsored Kasaija, whose early season winning streak was halted in the Lugazi Open, will be out to consolidate a slender lead.

“I need to win in Kinyara to widen the gap a bit. I know the course but I expect a lot of competition especially from Deo Akope,” Kasaija said. “I have to be there early and see the changes on course.”

Kasaija’s focus may be on Akope in the event but Entebbe Golf Club’s Godfrey Mande poses a big threat to the championship leader’s title aspirations. Mande is one point behind Kasaija. The 36-hole stroke play tournament is sponsored by United Assurance Company.

Akope, who tied with Charles Yokwe on 20 points, is familiar with the par-71 course. The top eight players score UGU championship points.
