As part of this year’s World Press Freedom Day May 3, celebrations, Makerere University Mass Communication Department in conjunction with East African Media Institute Uganda chapter, inaugurated the Investigative Journalism Award at Hotel Africana last week.
Calm, but well attended, the occasion brought together journalists and media stakeholders to witness the first ever awards for excellence in reporting on corruption and human rights in Uganda.
Partrick Obong of Radio North in Lira and Isaac Mifumba of The Monitor took the prize of Investigative Journalists of the Year 2005 and walked away with plaques and a laptop each. However, no female journalist submitted any entry.
The awards were sponsored by DANIDA, DFID and NORAD. They will be supporting them for the next four years.
The occasion was graced by state minister for information, Nsaba Buturo, who was the guest of honour, Jorgen Peters of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, the Danish ambassador to Uganda, Stig Barlyng, who represented DANIDA and the EAMI Uganda Chapter boss, Enoch Mukokoma.
