POLITICIANS put grief at the back of their minds and turned the funeral of Busiro South MP Patrick Musisi into a political contest, with partyists and Movementists rooting for their own to replace the fallen legislator.
Josephine Maseruka reports that the Democratic Party (DP) factions leaders, who have been criticised that their bickering stressed Musisi to death, hinted that the death of their reconciliatory member would lead to unity in the party.
Hundreds of mourners from all political shades who thronged Mpala on Entebbe Road, were entertained to endless politicking from speakers who included ministers, the deputy speaker of parliament, MPs and DP senior officials.
Before Musisi’s body arrived at the burial grounds, some politicians campaigned for the post, ahead of the Busiro South parliamentary by-election.
Katabi LC3 chairman Gerald Mukasa urged residents not to vote for an NRM candidate, saying the constituency was historically for pluralists.
Deputy Speaker Rebecca Kadaga and Bugabula South MP Salaamu Musumba were dismayed by the politicking, saying it was not befitting the calm Musisi.
“How can you talk about a by-election even before Patrick’s body reaches here? Let’s mourn our friend in a dignified way,” Kadaga said. “Everything has its time. Save us from the politicking,” Musumba said.
DP president general Dr. Paul Ssemogerere was cheered as he walked with the leader of the other faction, Haji Nasser Sebaggala. Ssemogerere, Sebaggala and Francis Bwengye said reconciliation was the only way to reward Musisi.
