Jimmy Akena, the son of exiled Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) leader Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, on Friday campaigned against the referendum on political systems.
He was speaking at Makerere University’s Nkrumah Hall during UPC’s first official rally since the party fell from power in July 1985.
Present were Apac woman MP Betty Amongi, Kampala district UPC chairman Nelson Umah Tete, Nkrumah Hall warden Patrick Kirunda, Makerere lecturer Oweyega Afunaduula, party youth leader James Otoo and Joseph Ochieno, a UPC Constitutional Steering Committee (CSC) member.
About 200 mainly male Makerere students attended.
They were, however, not enthusiastic in displaying the UPC symbol of the open palm. An inter-hall swimming competition and the Scripture Union exhibition, both in the neighbourhood, competed with the rally in attracting student attention.
Akena was for the first time speaking publicly in Kampala since his return from exile about a month ago.
Last week CSC chairman Haji Badru Wegulo said the party was yet to decide on whether to participate in the referendum. Referring to an 11-page message, Akena said, “It is not correct to hold referenda on God-given personal-to-holder fundamental rights and freedoms.”
He said there were other priorities like education, health and roads on which the sh30b for the referendum could be spent.
