It will be yet another stormy hip-hop extravaganza in town when Senegalese rap extraordionaires Awadi Africa Unity breeze onto the scene this weekend. This time, though it will be with a tinge of nationalism.

The group will perform tomorrow at University Hall quadrangle at Makerere University from 7:00pm to 11:00pm. The show, which will be free of charge, will feature local artistes like Bebe Cool, Klear Kut and MC Lyte.

Alliance Française, University Hall and the Makerere University Guild are organising the concert.

Awadi Africa Unity is an internationally recognised rap group based in Dakar, Senegal. DJ Didier Awadi, their front man is arguably the most prominent artist on Africa’s Francophone rap scene.

This will be DJ Awadi’s second performance in Makerere following a similar one at the same venue in 2003. That time, the group came under the name Positive Black Soul. The show was free and attracted more than 3,000 people.

The group is on a Pan - African tour, in partnership with the UN Habitat Messenger of Truth under the theme ‘African Presidents’.

The theme is to look into the history of renowned African leaders who had aspirations, will-power and fought their countries.

“The idea is to bring forward speeches by these leaders in form of music.
They will sing about Nelson Mandela in South Africa, Haille Selassie in Ethiopia and Sir Edward Muteesa II in Uganda.

“The tour is not at all political, but rather entertaining, educative, historical and cultural.
Therefore, it will be of high interest to the audience, the majority of whom will be University students,” said Jessica Miiro, the public relations officer of Alliance Francaise.
Miiro said a series of workshops and recordings of Ugandan artistes like Bebe Cool, MC Lyte and Klear Kut will accompany the tour.

“Our local artistes will benefit because their music will be mixed with international hip hop artistes’ and the CD will be sold on the international market,” Miiro said.
