THE Guiness Power of Goodness panelists have selected Betty Bigombe as the winner of the June 2005 award.

Uganda Breweries launched the award in 1997 to recognise people with outstanding achievements and courage, who usually receive little or no recognition.

Recipients are selected by a panel comprising senior editors, media managers and respected community members.

The panel chairman is Fr Dr John Mary Waliggo. Bigombe was selected for her 12-year persistence to restore peace to war-torn northern Uganda.

“She is optimistic about the peace talks and takes risks. She is a courageous woman, who deserves the award,” Fr Waliggo said.

The panelists are New Vision’s William Pike, Daily Monitor’s Conrad Nkutu, Super FM’s Peter Sematimba, Radio One & Two’s Maria Kiwanuka, Radio Uganda’s Jack Turyamwijuka, Sanyu FM’s Azim Tharani, UTV’s Emmanuel Nkuruziza, Radio Simba’s Aga Sekalala and WBS TV’s Elvis Wavamunno.

The panelists meet every three months to select the winners.
