They were the better side, obviously, and that is why they won, but the Uganda national rugby team still has a long way to go before it plays its first 2007 World Cup Qualifiers game against Kenya in two weeks time.

Whether the players are not giving their all because it was just a trial match, or they just are not there yet, coach Yayiro Kasasa has his hands full.

“There are still weak areas, especially in the pack, it is not flowing as smooth as it should,” Kasasa said after the game. “We also have to work at implementing our game plan. But we shall get there, don’t worry, by the time the Kenyans come, we will be ready.”

The team was guilty of some scrappy play, a lot of dropped balls and ill-timed passes. But they are working on it, Kasasa insists, adding there should be no problem with the fitness.

“Our plans are on schedule, by the time we get to play a real game against any team, we shall be at our best,” he said.

Meanwhile, the current squad of 28 will be cut down to 25 players for next weekend’s trial match against Chairman’s XV, after which the final squad shall be named.
