SIR — I thank you for highlighting the commencement of the nationwide registration of NRM members in your story “NRM starts registration,” published last Saturday.

SIR — I thank you for highlighting the commencement of the nationwide registration of NRM members in your story “NRM starts registration,” published last Saturday. I wish, however, to clarify on the last paragraph of that story, which stated “We are targeting 200 members of 18 years and above in each village, especially here in Buganda, the west and some parts of the east where the Movement is popular.” What I said are as follows:
  • The NRM is a mass political organisation that is popular countrywide and not limited to “the west, Buganda and some parts of the east,” as the story states
  • The target is 200 members per village countrywide starting with those of 18 years and above because they are due to vote in the coming referendum. l Next on the priority are those in the borderline age (15-17 yrs) because some of them will be activists and others are due for the 2006 general elections. The ones of 15 years will be mobilised, recruited and registered to have an early political socialisation in NRM
  • The designated NRM registrars under the supervision of NRM interim village committees will conduct the registration exercise.
  • At registration a member will be given a duly signed membership card. Membership and subscription fees will be introduced gradually after exhaustive consultations within NRM.
