A mother of two survived a serial killer in Kampala recently. A well-dressed man pretending to be an employee of the Uganda Revenue Authority offered a lift to four women waiting for a taxi at the Uganda Management Institute main gate at 8:30pm on May 23. one lady was heading for Bweyogerere, while the other two were going to Ntinda, both Kampala suburbs.
The Ntinda-bound women disembarked at Nakawa traffic lights, leaving the other with the killer alone in his Toyota Corona. He drove her through Bugolobi, Kinawataka till he found a bushy valley at Namboole stadium where he robbed her of a mobile phone and cash after subjecting her to bloodcurdling psychological pain.
The robber, who boasted of being a serial killer, had two knives, a pistol, one rope with a knot and a bludgeon (see detailed report on page 21-22).
Police yesterday warned the public, especially women, against a new racket of robbers who offer travelers free lifts before raping and robbing them.
Jinja Road Police chief Wilson Kwanya said such incidents were common in Nakasero, Kololo, Acacia Avenue, Namirembe and Kitante roads and others where public transport is scarce at night.
The regional Police commander, Kampala Extra, Benson Oyo Nyeko on Wednesday said the thugs target women. He said the thugs grab ATM cards and force owners to withdraw money.
Police said young women have been raped, infected with HIV and abandoned in isolated places in the middle of the night.
