<b>Unicef to build latrines in north</b><br>KITGUM –– Unicef is to construct 200 latrines and 30 water systems for the Internally Displaced Persons in Kitgum, Lira, Pader, Apac, Soroti, Katakwi and Kaberamaido districts.

KITGUM –– Unicef is to construct 200 latrines and 30 water systems for the Internally Displaced Persons in Kitgum, Lira, Pader, Apac, Soroti, Katakwi and Kaberamaido districts. There are approximately 1.4 million people in the more than 200 camps in these districts. Martin Mogwanja, the Unicef resident representative, said they will also repair 120 boreholes and drill 80 more to enable the provision of 15 litres of water per person per day.

AIC expands
KAMPALA –– Hitimana Lukanika, the AIDS Information Centre (AIC) Executive Director, has disclosed that AIC served 220,000 clients in its 150 operational testing sites last year. AIC opened new branches in Lira, Soroti and Kabale districts and expanded to Voluntary Counsel-ling and Testing services in Kigezi, Teso and Karamoja.

Katakwi health centre upgrades
KATAKWI –– The ministry of health is to upgrade the sub district health centre (Health Centre IV) to a district hospital this year. The state minister for health, Capt. Mike Mukula said funds have been allocated for new modern machines, a new ambulance and drugs needed to run it.

‘Sensitise people more about AIDS’
MUKONO –– Godfrey Ddamulira, the district chairman, has urged the Government to sensitise people in villages about HIV/AIDS. He said deep in villages, people still think HIV/AIDS is spread through witchcraft. “Government should incorporate HIV/AIDS education in its Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture and Poverty Eradication Action Plan,” he urged.

Malaria warning
KAMPALA –– About 70% of people are at risk of getting malaria, Dr. Livingston Makanga, the Malaria Focal Person, has said. Mosquitoes have increased during the rainy season. Swampy areas, places with stagnant water and uncovered tanks, which are good breeding ground for mosquitoes, are now many. He called for serious sensitisation and training of LCs to reduce out patient malaria infection rate.
