The First Lady, Mrs. Janet Museveni, on Monday concluded a five-day study of development projects in Bangladesh, focussing on alleviating the plight of children.
UNICEF, the UN agency overseeing the plight of children in the world, invited Mrs. Museveni because of her leading role in alleviating the conditions of vulnerable children and women.
Bangladesh has registered progress in the fight against poverty, using micro-credit to train and empower poor communities.
She visited Palli Karma Shahayak Foundation (PKSF) project in Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital.
The PKSF is a bank scheme for training women on saving skills and availing them with credit for development projects.
Mrs. Museveni also visited Kalikor village in North-East Bangladesh, where the Grameen Bank assists poor communities and beggars to turn around their lives.
She was conducted around the village by the bank deputy director, Djea Chandra. The beneficiaries, most of whom are women, said the loans had helped them generate income. Mrs. Museveni hailed the organisation and invited it to partner with Uganda NGOs devoted to similar causes.
